The year 2009 was like a gust of wind that has brought along tons of new girls groups, but whose hand will MAMA (no pun intended but that’s the acronym) hold now?
Major Korean music channel Mnet has announced that their Mnet Korean Music Festival (MKMF) will now be renamed as Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)!
Mnet announced on October 23 that the live broadcast will change its concept and the way they will handle how people may vote for which artist wins the award.
Mnet also announced that Park Ji Yoon, SG Wannabe’s Kim Yong Jun and Lee Seok Hoon will become the new MC’s of the event.

Mnet is planning on handing out the “Rookie Female Group Award,” to the following nominees: 2NE1, 4minute, After School, f(x), and last but not least, T-ara.

Having seen the five groups show up suddenly and made a comet-like impact upon the K-Pop world, many are extremely curious as to who will MAMA choose to be the rookie female group of the year.
The live broadcast of the 2009 MAMA will take place on November 21 at Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium. People that live outside of Korea, don’t give your hopes up yet, because there’s a reason why MAMA is titled MAMA! Via Channel V International, the event will be broadcasted in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Thailand.
The special main event will be the “Global Artist Award.” In addition, another major change is that the Trot genre will be added on along with the other Pop music awards.
There will be a total of 7 categories of artists, 7 categories of genres, and 2 categories of music video nominations during the event. In addition, there will be a total of 30 awards for each nominated song.
People may start voting on October 23, 2009 through the Mnet homepage.

So Nyeo Shi Dae has once again risen up to the #1 spot on KBS Music Bank K Chart on 27th February.
This makes them the winner with the longest running consecutive wins on the chart with 7 consecutive #1.
They first had won #1 on the chart with the title song ‘Gee’ from their first minialbum on 16th Janaury. They have also broken the record set by group Jewelry last year with the song ‘One More Time’ that also won 7 consecutive #1 on the chart. When receiving over their award, the girls were tearing with happiness.
All eyes will be set on the girls as to whether they will be able to get their 8th consecutive win on the chart next week, furthering acing the record that they have broken on the show. Especially when there is all the talk about the absence of any strong competitor at this time to the girls.
Korea’s Idol Groups are preparing to withdraw from being presentors of Korea’s school uniform.
In the morning of 23rd Jan. 09 , South Korea School Uniform Confederation and School Uniform Business Trader had met at Saejong Building , Kwanghwamun , Seoul. To attend the announcement from Ministry Of Education And Science which been revealed that ” Every famous artists will have to stop being presentors for school uniform. And the command will become effective since this February 09”
On passed 23rd , The Business Trader to attend the meeting are as followed :

Looks like the KBS producers have finally wisened up and realized they need the girls, because Girls’ Generation will finally be performing after 4 long weeks.
Girls’ Generation will be performing “Gee,” “Dear Mom,” and “Him Nae (Way to go), on the January 30th episode of KBS Music Bank. The girls have already taken the No.1 spot on Music Bank for the past 3 weeks, even with the ban, and it looks like they will continue their streak this week

After two aborted attempts and a year of relatively inactivity on the music front as a group, So Nyeo Shi Dae will make their comeback in January 2009.
They are currently filming their music video and a teaser clip is due on 2nd January. This will be followed by their comeback performance via Music Bank on 9th January. It will not be a full-length album like most hoped but a mini-album which will drop in the same week. The new song will be composed by E-Tribe, the same person who created U-Go-Girl for Lee Hyori and Pretty Girl for Kara. So Nyeo Shi Dae are expected to stick with their cutesy concept.

You dance for the first time in 13 years in “Human Dream,” are you planning on coming back as a dance singer?
Honestly when I was preparing the record I wasn’t thinking of that but I have had thoughts of putting in “haeng wi ye sul” (=a street performance) or “pet shop boys” kinds of motions. As I was filming the MV, I came up with a lot of ideas and I decided to go with a somewhat imaginary singing atmosphere. This naturally led to having the color “pink” and that in turn gave way to a bright and cheery feel, not unlike that of idol group So Nyuh Shi Dae, and then so I decided to match a dance to that and met with choreographer Seo Gichul to make some moves up. There’s nothing weird with that since I can go around and proudly state that I come from a dance singer background. Last week I met Yang Hyunsuk and even asked him if, “he could compete with me.” (laughs)
Together with Wonder Girls, they transformed last year into a ‘girl’ revolution, and now SNSD is set to make their comeback.
At the end of this month, SNSD will introduce their second album and will be a part of this eventful autumn that has been full of the top singers making their comebacks in the music industry.
SM Entertainment recently released a statement saying, “SNSD’s new album will have dance, ballads and other various genres. Moreover, if last year’s debut was full of fresh charm, then for this new album, we will show you a SNSD that has been upgraded with a more feminine feel.”
Facing the release of their new album, they have been taking methods to become more closer to their fans. The best case of this would be their reality program “SNSD’s Factory Girl” that premiered on the 8th on the cable channel MNet. This program showcases the entertaining situations that occur to SNSD as they transform into editors for a fashion magazine. All of this is in an attempt for them to become closer with their fans as the release of their album draws nearer.
This program was actually filmed following their conclusion of their promotional activities for their first album and during a break time that they had. They matched the broadcast time with the time that the new album is set to release in order to increase the effectiveness of their promotion.
The important thing to note here is that thus far, SM has not released an official statement regarding the release of SNSD’s album until this statement. Furthermore, the Korean press is not known for its (ahem) journalistic integrity, and that is why there has been numerous conflicting reports of the album release date. Some said mid-October, some said early November, this one says late October. The fact that SM has not given an official date yet means that you should NOT be getting all excited and then disappointed with the reports from sites like Melon or Dosirak that have (or had) release dates on their charts or from blog sites. Until something is released from the official SM camp, don’t believe anything else that comes out about the album.
That being said, the one thing that’s clear is that the second album WILL be released very very soon.

“These days we’ve gained “samchon fans” among our fans. It seems like our range of fans have increased. If you go to a fan signing, there’s even 30 or 40 year old samchons (uncles) who come bringing ginseng and herbal medicine for us.” (Yoona)
Nine member girl group SNSD has been reborn as the nation’s girl dongseng group. Starting from teenagers to 30 year olds out in the workforce, the people listen to their songs and follow along to their dances, excited and enthusiastic.
Following along exactly with the fresh and new image of teenagers, SNSD has been showing the public a different side to the image of girl groups in the 90s, with groups such as SES and FinKL that had a sexy and innocent concept.
I did an interview with SNSD members Taeyeon, Yoona and Seohyun.
— How did you spend your trainee days.
“Everything was so fascinating and fun. I was happy to learn such a variety of things and I was always nervous thinking of how I was getting closer to my dreams” (Yoona)
— How was the training that you received.
“Everyone is trained in singing, dancing, acting and foreign languages. And depending on your individual talents or if you had a particular area you wanted to emphasize, you would receive a slightly different training.”
— If there was something that sets SNSD apart from the other girl bands.
“Since we have more members, we can show a variety of different charms and we can be active in more areas. Because we can be active not just as a group, but also individually.” (Yoona)
“Our point is to show a bright and healthy image that matches our age. It would probably be that we are showing an image and music that matches our age.” (Taeyeon)
— They say that idol groups break up easily.
“On average, we have members that have been together for at least five years. So we have a feeling of being real sisters.” (Yoona)
“Monitoring each other on tv is a given. More than just that, we confide in each other and we really spend time together like a family. And since im the maknae, my unnies take care of me even more. I don’t think we will be broken apart very easily.” (Seohyun)

Girls’ Generation’s Tae Yeon was selected as ‘The Most likely Female Artist In A Group To Succeed If Went Solo.”
According to 12 day community portal site, DC Inside posted a poll that lasted from the 4th to the 11th. The poll asked ‘Who Is the Mostly Likely Femal Artist IN a Group To Succeed If Went Solo.” Out of the total possible votes of 4737, Tae Yeon received 1680 votes (35.5%) putting her in 1st place.
Earlier this year, Tae Yeon provided the vocals for KBS2 drama OST for ‘Hong Gil Dong’ starring Sung Yuri as Huh Enoc. The song was titled ‘If’ and grabbed many people’s attention. With Tae Yeon’s exeptional voice and sad tone, she was able to lead the OST to the top of the charts.
And again, Tae Yeon was chosen to provide vocals for the OST for MBC’s hit drama ‘Beethoven Virus’ starring Lee Jiah as Durumi. The song is titled ‘Can You Hear Me’ and as you can see, she is emerging as the OST Queen.
2nd place with 1383 votes (29.2%) was Kara’s Han Seung Yeon. With Kara’s mini album Rock You, she has gained a lot of popularity. And she also chosen to MC on music channel KMTV’s tv show called ‘So-Nyun So-Nyuh Gayo Baekseo.” She continues to be a lively host on that show.
Wonder Girl’s Sunye recieved 189 votes (4%) and came in 3rd place. Sunye was featured on Mighty Mouth’s track ‘Energy’ and has gained a lot of popularity.
Also Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany and Hyoyeon, Wonder Girl’s Sohee, and, Brown Eyed Girl’s Ga-In made this list as well.
Dong Bang Shin Ki sold over 30 thousand CDs and took first in the month of september. The leaders of September, Dong Bang Shin Ki is solidifying their place as the CD selling king.
According the the 2008 September CD sales rankings that the Korean Music Industry Association released, Dong Bang Shin Ki’s release of “Jumun-Mirotic” sold 37,974 albums in the month of september and took first. With the exceptional sales, Dong Bang Shin Ki looks to be a favorite for 2008’s record champion.
The sale of over 30,000 albums, until 2008 Dong Bang Shin Ki, was unprecedented. Last August, the idol group Big Bang sold just over 10,000 albums and claimed the album sales title for that month. The Music Industry Association stated that Dong Bang Shin Ki, being the only artist to top 20,000 albums sold in 2008, will be 1st for most albums sold.

WonderGirls SunYe, So Nyeo Shi Dae YoonAh and Joo has all passed the test to enter for DongKook University.
It was revealed on 4th November that SunYe, YoonAh and Joo has successfully been selected for the year 2009. They were selected for the arts (scting) faculty.
SunYe has graduated from Korea Arts High School in February , while Joo and YooAh will be graduating from Korea Arts High School and DaeYoung High respectively next February.
